Understanding Grief For those who have lost a loved one Special Topics

Death of a child

"I'd rather suffer or die for my son. ...... Why would such a tragedy happen to my little boy?"

The parent-child relationship is inseparable and impossible to break. It is "unusual" for children to die before their parents. Losing a child is like losing the continuity of life, the future, and all hopes. No matter how their children pass away, parents often feel that they did not protect their children good enough and are often preoccupied by guilt.

Things I can do ......
  • Explore different ways to continue the parent-child relationship, such as fulfilling the child's wishes, holding ceremonies, and doing good deeds in the child’s name.
  • Review the child’s life and find meaning for his/her life.
  • Give ourselves space to deal with our grief.
  • Understand that our partner or other family members may handle grief differently.
