Understanding Grief For those who have lost a loved one Special Topics

Death of a husband, wife or partner

"Losing a partner is like losing a limb. We used to do everything together. Now I need to handle them all by myself.”

A companion is always in a "pair". Whether the relationship is intimate, conflicting or distant, it is still an important one for many people. If the loved ones suffer from chronic illness during their lifetime, the partner often have to take on the role as caregivers.  They have to see their loved ones suffer from illness, as well as physical and mental exhaustion. When the loved ones pass away, the partners may often have ambivalent feelings. On one hand, they may feel relieved, yet on the other hand, they may feel intense sadness and yearning for their loved ones. If the loved ones die of accidents or sudden illnesses, the bereaved may feel shock and denial. All their plans and dreams would vanish without a trace, leaving only the bereaved and their endless loneliness.
