Understanding Grief For those who have lost a loved one Special Topics

Death of parents

"Although the deaths of my parents were somehow expected, I never thought I would have the feeling of becoming an orphan after their deaths."

As time passes, children grow up and parents become old, our roles and responsibilities in the family would also change. Some people are unprepared for the sudden deaths of their parents and thus experience sadness and regret. Others may have been under the pressure of caring for their frail parents for a long time, and their relationships are intimate but entangled. Alternatively, some children may have been estranged from their parents, and they then realize that they have left a lot of unfinished businesses behind when their parents pass away…

The loss of a parent at any age can create a sense of "orphanhood" in a child. When facing the death of our parents, we are forced to re-examine our relationships with different family members and think about our own mortality.

Things I can do ......
  • Review the influence of parents on you, and explore how you want to move on with life.
  • Try to finish parents’ unfinished business by different symbolic ways.
  • Continue the spirit and teaching of parents in different forms.
  • Share the caring tasks for the surviving parent with other family members to enhance mutual support.
